Getting You Through Your Feels: An Interview with Ehahn
It all began at a Taylor Swift concert. Middle schooler Ehahn was watching Taylor perform an acoustic rendition of Fearless as the crowd sang along, hooked on every note. The energy of the audience and the connection that they seemed to have with Taylor led Ehahn to realize that she wanted to make music.
“Right after that I begged my parents for guitar lessons,” she said. “And my mom, she worked at a high school and they were getting rid of their guitars to buy new ones, like brought home a guitar one day. It was super dope [and I] started writing from there.”
Ehahn is an up-and-coming indie-pop artist who aspires to perfect her storytelling abilities through catchy, easy-to-listen-to songs. She cites her biggest inspiration as Taylor Swift, saying that “anyone who’s making any sort of pop music nowadays, they’d be lying if they said she wasn’t [an inspiration to them]. She is the music industry.” Ehahn has also been influenced by Frank Ocean through his storytelling abilities not only within his lyrics but within his instrumentals as well.
Ehahn produces most of her own music through the software Logic which she describes as a paid version of Apple’s Garageband. Using Logic and a mic she has set up in her room, she’s able to do all of her recording and producing at home. Along with songwriting and producing, Ehahn also does her own digital design using Adobe Illustrator.
Her latest release, “Forget My Name” tells the story of a relationship in which the other person is only keeping you around to have someone who wants them. “It’s one of those situations where you’re really frustrated but also really vulnerable, so I kinda wanted to capture that duality in the song,” Ehahn said. “It’s like you’re angry because it sucks and this person is like totally using you and you know that, but it’s also like “oh, well I still like them so this sucks. I’m not gonna leave’”. The instrumentals on “Forget My Name” capture this duality well with softer verses that display vulnerability and a stronger chorus that symbolizes the anger of the situation.
Along with music, Ehahn says that she has recently gotten into photography. “I bought one of those disposable cameras with film and that was super fun, I took a bunch of pictures,” she said. “I’m home right now but I was in Philly for the past three months so I was just taking pictures with my friends and then I got them developed which was cool.” Ehahn also mentioned that the album cover for the “Forget My Name” release features a photo that was taken by one of her friends on that very disposable camera, complete with lettering that she did herself in Illustrator.
As she heads into the future, Ehahn hopes to continue making music. “I just really enjoy the creative aspect of making [music] from songwriting to building the song’s structure or instrumentation to adding fun melodic lines and stuff,” she said. “I’m working on a bigger release right now so hopefully that’ll be out, I’m hoping before like, next Fall.”
When Ehahn told me about her inspirations, I could absolutely hear the vibe of her favorite artists like Taylor Swift, Halsey, and FLETCHER in her songs. Whether you prefer more of an indie/alternative sound or a straight-up pop sound, Ehahn has you covered. In her own words, she makes “catchy, honest music that can get you through your feels” and I think we could all use some of that.
